A SIMPLE METHOD FOR THE ROUTINE EXTRACTION AND QUANTIFICATION OF NONSTRUCTURAL SUGARS IN TREE TISSUES

This paper describes a simple method for the quantification of total n on-structural carbohydrates in coniferous tissues. The method is based on a water extraction procedure and the quantification procedure util izes p-hydroxybenzoic acid hydrazide, (p-HBAH). Results are compared w ith those from samples of known carbohydrate content and with an alter native established but lengthier procedure. There was good agreement i n all comparative tests and the method is now routinely used for carbo hydrate analysis within the UK Forestry Commission.
