An optical spot size transformer for efficient butt-coupling of single
mode fibres to optoelectronic InGaAsP/InP chips is investigated. The
losses associated with the transformation of the fibre mode into a sma
ll elliptical mode are calculated with the help of a simple theoretica
l model. The measured transmission loss of 2.0 dB is in good agreement
with the theoretical result. The alignment tolerances (corresponding
to 90% of maximum transmission) for the butt-coupled fibre amount to /- 2.0 mum for the lateral offset, +/- 1.5 mum for the vertical offset
and 25 mum for the separation of fibre and chip.
