At present human civilization finds itself not only in a landscape-eco
logical, but also in a social-ecological crisis. Hence in handling con
temporary ecological problems their social-ecological dimension also c
omes into full display. The contemporary ecological situation of settl
ement is the outcome of recent anthropic pressure upon the environment
of settlements. It is characterized by confronting ecological conditi
ons (estimated in terms of the areal presence and landscape-ecological
significance of various elements of land use) and the ecological stat
e of settlements (reflecting the intensity of the impact of negative f
actors). The contemporary social-economic situation of settlements is
the result of the historic development and cultural life as well as of
the society's management on the given territory. Analysed are economi
c conditions conceived as the ability of satisfying man's basic existe
ntial needs (housing, labour, education etc.).
