The spin-reorientation transitions in Tm2Fe17Cx, are analyzed in terms
of the crystal field and the Tm-Fe exchange interactions. It is deduc
ed that with increasing carbon concentration, the Tm-Fe exchange field
decreases slightly, whereas the absolute value of the second-order cr
ystal-field parameter increases dramatically. The carbon concentration
and temperature dependence of the magnetic anisotropy of the Tm ions
in Tm2Fe17Cx are discussed.
