The possible production of optical ceramics for the spectral range 8-1
4 mum from rare-earth double sulfides with the general formula AIILn2S
4, where A(II) is an alkaline-earth element, and Ln is a rare-earth el
ement is discussed. The activity of disperse powders during consolidat
ion has been examined, and a study has been carried out of the effect
of composition (A(II) = Ca,Sr,Zn; Ln = La,Nd,Gd) and degree of dispers
ion of the mixture on the activity during consolidation. The propertie
s of the resulting ceramics have been investigated.
