The thermal conductivity (kappa) has been measured for a series of mul
lite/cordierite composites in the temperature range 20 to 300 K. The K
lemens-Callaway model, which is used to describe the temperature depen
dence of kappa for crystalline materials, has been applied to the expe
rimental results. This model incorporates three phonon-scattering term
s, that include the effect of impurities, grain boundaries and phonons
. The compositional dependence shows the characteristic form indicatin
g the possibility of the formation of solid solutions.
