In chive cv. 'Wilau' selected male sterile plants were characterized m
olecularly and cytogenetically. A comparison with other male sterile t
ypes of Allium schoenoprasum showed differences for microsporogenesis,
the mt protein biosynthesis, and restriction enzyme analysis. The off
spring in progenies of the male sterile types gives clear indications
for a new male sterility. It is proposed to use the symbol (M) for its
cytoplasm and W for the dominant restorer gene.
