The vibration amplitudes of hammer foundations must be kept within acc
eptable limits during operation. A one-dimensional wave equation model
based on the finite element method is proposed for the analysis of th
ese foundations. The results of the wave equation model are shown to c
ompare favourably with some reported solutions and with experimental m
easurements. The versatility of the model allows the various component
s of the hammer-foundation system to be readily simulated.
