The [(SO4)Mo(O)(mu-S)2Mo(O)(SO4]2- anions are obtained by the high-tem
perature reaction (approximately 120-degrees-C) between SO2 and either
[(DMF)3Mo(O)(mu-S)2Mo(O)(S2)] or [(DMF)3Mo(O)(mu-S)2Mo(O)-(DMF)3]2+.
The dimerization of these anions to give the 2]6-x(Et4N)x[{(SO4)Mo(O)(
mu-S)2-Mo(O)(SO4)}2(SO4)] aggregates (x = 1, 2, 2.5) occurs in the pre
sence of SO42- and the [(CH3)2-NH2]+ cations. This assembly is stabili
zed by a quadruply bridging sulfate ligand and intramolecular hydrogen
bonding facilitated bv the [(CH3)2NH2]+ cations.
