The White Sea soft coral Gersemia fruiticosa has been found to convert
exogenous arachidonic acid to optically active prostaglandins D2, E2,
F2alpha and 15-keto-F2alpha, all of which were also isolated as endog
enous constituents from the same coral extracts. This is the first rep
ort of in vitro biosynthesis of ''primary mammalian'' prostaglandins i
n coral.
