Abstract
The study of the impact of hydrocarbons and in particular polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) on the environment requires the developmen t of highly advanced techniques to measure these non-regulated polluta nts. The paper addresses the measurement by Shpol'skii spectrofluorome try of polluting PAH emissions of passenger cars. This quantitative st udy has been carried out for 13 related PAH including four, five and s ix nuclei from a sample of 10 gasoline-engined and 20 diesel-engined v ehicles representative of the French vehicle fleet according to differ ent main driving cycles, six INRETS cycles (low speed or free flow urb an cycles, road and motorway cycles), 1 tunnel cycle and the standard European ECE 15 cycle. The effects of the cold or hot start types, tun ing, vehicle range and age are analysed from all the quantitative resu lts obtained.
