Abstract
A novel optically addressed normal incidence multiple quantum well lig ht modulator based on polarization rotation has been demonstrated for the first time. This modulator employs the anisotropic excitonic absor ption created by a thermally induced in-plane uniaxial strain in a mul tiple quantum well structure to achieve rotations as large as +/- 25-d egrees. An exceedingly high contrast ratio of 330:1 has been measured in this device.
