We report recent measurements of the enhancement of electron-stimulate
d desorption (ESD) of excited CN from KCl, NaCl, NaF, and LiF surfaces
due to the exposure of the surfaces to gaseous H-2. The CN desorptio
n yield varies linearly with the ESD yield of atomic hydrogen. The mea
sured rotational distribution of CN desorbed from a H-2-dosed LiF sur
face is different from that for an un-dosed LiF surface. We propose an
HCN-mediated process to explain the hydrogen-enhanced CN desorption.
