The spectra of electrons emitted during the collision of slow He+ ions
with metal surfaces are calculated. We consider the Auger neutralizat
ion process to be responsible for the electron emission. The main ingr
edients in our calculation of the Auger transition rate are the energy
level variation of the ls state of He and the effective electron dens
ity n(z) which takes care of the electron tunneling through the metal-
atom potential well. Our results are compared with available experimen
ts for Cu.
