During the first half of 1995 there was a regional outbreak of parvovi
rus infections (erythema infectiosum) in Styria, Austria. We report on
7 cases of acute parvovirus infection in pregnancy. The ultrasonograp
hic examinations showed signs of fetal hydrops in 5 fetuses. In 3 case
s percutaneous blood sampling was performed and 2 of the 3 fetuses rec
eived intrauterine blood transfusions. Five of the 7 pregnant women de
livered healthy newborn at term. Two patients had abortions in the 15t
h and 17th week of pregnancy.
