A vacuum-arc source of metal ions (MEVVA) with the composite (Mosaic)
molybdenum-lead cathode is investigated. Several holes were drilled in
the cathode, and lead melted into them. It was found that the cathode
spot goes from the molybdenum to the lead during arc discharge. The r
everse transition was not observed. The presence of Pb3+ ions only dur
ing the molybdenum-lead transition shows that the arc voltage diminish
es during the transition. The minimum velocity of the cathode-spot mot
ion is approximately 20 m/sec.
