Digital simulators proved to be versatile tools in all fields of chemi
cal engineering. Therefore, as an important aspect of their education,
students should learn how to use them efficiently. Specific requireme
nts resulting from this educational environment are identified. In mos
t cases commercially available simulation systems do not fulfill these
demands. Based on just a few very basic but powerful ideas, a simulat
ion program is developed which covers all the issues relevant for educ
ational purposes. Two representative examples are used to illustrate t
he performance and flexibility of the simulator
