Abstract
We have synthesized and studied the physicochemical properties of six series of emulsifier-free latexes based on different monomeric composi tions with different solubilities in water We have shown that the hydr ophobicity of the monomeric composition is of considerable importance for the stability of latexes, affecting both the electrostatic and the structural component of the latter. We discuss the hypothesis that th e maximum stability is achieved for a certain integrated solubility in water for the monomers, corresponding to the optimal distribution of the polymerization reaction between the aqueous solution and the latex particles.
