Abstract
The effect of electrolytes on the thickness of the protective hydrate shells of particles of styrene- and vinyl acetate-maleate latexes was investigated. It was found that sodium phosphate has the greatest dehy drating effect for styrene-maleate latexes, while sodium phosphate and aluminum chloride have the greatest effect for vinyl acetate-maleate latexes. The hydration of latex particles was shown to be an empirical function of the concentration of electrolyte. A quantitative correlat ion was established between the resistance of the latex to coagulation by electrolytes and the thickness of the particle hydrate shells.
