The heat capacity of polypentanal was studied by adiabatic vacuum calo
rimetry at 10 - 330 K, and the thermodynamic parameters of the melting
and the glass transition of the polymer were evaluated. Using these d
ata, the thermodynamic functions of the polymer at 0 - 330 K were dete
rmined. These results, together with the published thermodynamic prope
rties of pentanal and its polymerization enthalpy, were used to calcul
ate the enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs free energy for the bulk polymeri
zation of pentanal at 0 - 330 K. The upper limiting polymerization tem
peratures were estimated for crystalline and elastomeric states of the
final polymer.
