Based on an IR spectroscopic analysis, it is shown that the treatment
of polyacrylonitrile films and fibers by gamma-irradiation leads to th
e cleavage of polymer chains, forming carbonyl-containing functional g
roups. The composition of these groups is found to depend on the treat
ment conditions. The presence of terminal methyl groups in the treated
polymer is detected in its IR spectra only in the presence of residua
l basic solvent. The behavior of the absorption bands in the range 135
0 - 1380 cm-1 and at 970 cm-1 points to the occurrence of conformation
al changes in the polymer.
