Spectroscopic and viscometric techniques were employed to study cycliz
ation involving AA groups of polyacrylonitrile and polymethacrylonitri
le in solution. Sodium amylate was used as an agent to initiate the cy
clization. Comparison of the changes in the electronic structure occur
ring on addition of an alkali or sodium amylate to a solution of the p
olymers allowed us to suggest that there existed two types of ionic st
ructures. The absence of the coil - globule conformational transition
when sodium amylate was used to initiate cyclization results from the
fact that, in the absence of AA ions, it is not possible for primary c
ross-links to form and promote the transition of macromolecules to a c
ompact state.
