Convoy electrons produced at glancing-angle incidence of MeV H, He, Li
and C ions on a SnTe(001) surface are studied. Acceleration of the co
nvoy electrons is observed. The acceleration increases with increasing
atomic number of the projectile ion and with decreasing ion energy, i
n harmony with the surface-wake-acceleration model. The acceleration o
f convoy electrons by the surface wake is calculated with a classical-
trajectory Monte Carlo simulation. The calculated results reproduce th
e characteristic features of the observed convoy electrons showing the
validity of the surface-wake-acceleration model.
