Abstract
The mean lifetimes of the 4p'F-2(7/2)0 level of Ar+ and the 4p'F-1(3), level of Cl-35+ have been measured with precisions of 0.5% or better using a new variant of the ''rapid Doppler switching'' technique. Meta stable ions produced in the ion source were excited by a frequency-fix ed laser beam. The present mean lifetime results are tau(Ar+, 4p' F-2( 7/2)0) = 8.414 +/- 0.025 ns and tau(Cl-35+, 4p' F-1(3)) = 11.17 +/- 0. 06 ns.
