We have constructed and installed at the Michigan State University Nat
ional Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory a 40 cm bore, 1 m long, sup
erconducting solenoid (B(oz) almost-equal-to 7 T) for use as a large-s
olid-angle reaction-product collector lens. The device has been used t
o produce short-lived isomeric secondary beams and very neutron-rich n
uclei (A = 40-80). These initial tests and the magnet's performance ar
e described.
