Se was measured in plasma and urine samples; the former, a good indica
tor of daily Se intake, is well correlated with Se content in soils; t
he latter indicates Se balance and variations. The analysis was perfor
med by PIXE with samples prepared following a specific preconcentratio
n procedure, using 600 mug of tellurium both as a coprecipitating agen
t and as an internal standard. Data obtained in 375 individuals (183 h
ealthy subjects and 192 subjects with various physiological and pathol
ogical conditions) showed low plasma Se mean values in healthy individ
uals; further reduction was observed in some pathological conditions.
