A comparative morphological study of isolates of Phytophthora hibernal
is and P. syringae confirmed that these are two distinct species, read
ily distinguished by the easily deciduous, elongated ovoid to ellipsoi
dal sporangia with long pedicels and the amphigynous and paragynous an
theridia in varying proportions in the former and the nondecidous, bro
adly ovoid, obpyriform to ellipsoidal sporangia and the predominantly
paragynous antheridia in the latter. Confusions in literature concerni
ng these two species can be attributable to misidentification and/or a
cceptance of Tucker's treatment of P. hibernalis synonymous with P. sy
ringae which had priority.
