Abstract
In the subepithelial plexus of the sole, fine methionine enkephalin im munoreactive (ME-ir) axons have been found in diverse pulmonates (Cepa ea nemoralis, Helix pomatia, Deroceras reticulatum, Limax maximus, Lym naea stagnalis) and prosobranchs (Acmaea sp., Littorina littorea). The y seem to originate from neuronal cell bodies located in the CNS. Invo lvement of pedal ME-ir elements in analgesic effects of endogenous opi oids is discussed.
