The effect of bath-applied synthetic analog of leuenkephaline delargin
and its antagonist naloxone on synaptic transmission was studied in a
n isolated preparation of the mandibular group of the ampullae of Lore
nzinin of skates, Raja clavata. Dalargin (10(-6)-10(-10) mol/l) was sh
own to inhibit both the resting and evoked activity in a dose-dependen
t manner. Naloxone also inhibited the afferent activity and blocked re
sponses elicited by application of dalargin. Excitatory responses to L
-glutamate were reduced in the presence of dalargin. It is supposed th
at the modulatory effect of dalargin on glutamatergic synaptic transmi
ssion in the ampullae of Lorenzini acts via specific opiate receptors.
