With the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, there
is a renewed emphasis on library collection accessibility for persons
with disabilities. Modem computer technology can be adapted so that v
isually impaired or blind people can independently access today's onli
ne catalog. Successful creation and maintenance of a speaking large-pr
int catalog requires a mixture of hardware, software, and caring peopl
e. A team with vision and stamina for a continuing promotion and educa
tion program is essential. The availability of the adapted online cata
log will open new horizons to blind and visually impaired patrons in b
oth the public and academic sectors.
