A dynamic nitrate mass balance model is described for reservoir system
s which takes into account denitrification processes, reservoir depth,
temperature and changing residence time. The model has been applied t
o four reservoir systems in the Thames Region namely Farmoor I and II,
the Queen Mother and the Queen Mary reservoirs. Reservoir nitrogen dy
namics are simulated over long periods of record. The model is used to
assess optimal conditions for reservoir nitrate management.
