Poly (phenylene sulfide) (PPS) and its derivatives, poly (phenylene su
lfide-co-phenylene ketone) (PPSK), poly(phenylene sulfide-co-phenylene
ether) (PPSE), poly (biphenylene sulfide) (PBPS) and poly (phenylene
sulfide-co-phenylene sulfone) (PPSS), were synthesized and their therm
al properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry a
nd thermogravimetric analysis. PPSK, PBPS and PPS show high crystallin
ity, in that descending order, while PPSS is totally amorphous. Semi-
and non-crystalline PPS/PPSS polymers were melt blended. The blends sh
owed relatively high miscibility and thermal stability. The T(g) of PP
S/PPSS blends shows 10 and 45-degrees-C inward shift; the melt crystal
lization temperature (T(mc)) of PPS decreased to 227-degrees-C in the
PPS/PPSS blend compared to 244-degrees-C for the PPS homopolymer, as d
etermined by differential scanning calorimetry in a cooling scan.
