Bottom sediments and fresh sediments collected in sedimentation chambe
rs of the river Elbe were analysed for PCDDs/Fs, chlorobenzenes (CBs),
and chlorophenols (CPs). The differences in PCDD/F concentrations, co
ngener profiles, and isomeric patterns between the sampling points ups
tream and downstream the harbour of Hamburg are discussed. Congener pa
tterns are evaluated with respect to possible sources. The PCDD/F resu
lts are compared to values from the river Rhine.
