Abstract
Mixing in cavity flows generated by discontinuous motion of the top an d bottom walls according to periodic, recursive, and random protocols is studied using bifurcation analysis and statistical evaluation of th e uniformity of simulated mixtures. Although recursive and random prot ocols can always produce a uniform mixture, a simple periodic protocol with a properly chosen period is at least as good as them in terms of the rate of mixing.
