MIDDLETON et al. (1987, Journal of Geophysical Research, 92, 9487-9493
) have observed edge waves in the coastal ocean near Sydney, and postu
lated that they are generated by the envelope of the radiation stress
of wind-driven surface waves. In this paper we construct a simple theo
retical model of this process. Analytical and numerical solutions show
that radiation stress can generate free and forced edge waves, with t
he greatest response occurring when there is a near-resonance between
the forcing and the free edge-wave modes.
