In 1990, construction of the United States' first dedicated food irrad
iator began shortly after the owner, Vindicator of Florida obtained a
building permit. It was obtained after several years of effort to conv
ince local governments and reverse negative public opinion seeded by a
ctivists. This paper describes the series of important events up to an
d including the market launch of the first irradiated food product int
o the important U.S. marketplace. A profile of changing media treatmen
t and critical actions will be presented.
