Abstract
Ultrastructural changes of the germinal vesicle during the growth of r abbit oocytes were studied by means of light and electron microscopy, H-3-uridine autoradiography, Ag-NOR staining and E-PTA staining. Parti cular interest was paid to the nucleolo-genesis and condensation of ch romatin. In contrast to other mammalian species, chromosome condensati on in rabbit oocytes occurred concomitantly with rRNA synthesis-depend ent nucleolar compaction and preceded nuclear envelope breakdown and r esumption of meiosis.
