Three strategies are described for designing electrochemical oscillato
rs involving electrochemical reactions at inert electrodes. The strate
gies are based on coupling a negative faradaic impedance with mass tra
nsport, and it is argued that the dynamic behaviour of all of these sy
stems is expected to be qualitatively similar. The three ''recipes'' a
re illustrated by experiments of simple reduction reactions at the han
ging mercury drop electrode.
