In search for new organic donors we have considered chalcogen substitu
ted polyclic arenes such as dioxapyrene and dithiapyrene. This contrib
ution presents the crystal structures of a charge-transfer complex of
3,8-diethyl-5,10-dimethyl-1,6-dioxapyrene (DEDMDOP) and two cation rad
ical salts of 3,5,8,10-tetramethyl-1,6-dioxapyrene (TMDOP). The compou
nds are DEDMDOP-TCNQ (1:1), (TMDOP)2PF6 and (TMDOP)2BF4, of which the
latter two are isostructural. All three compounds crystallize in ortho
rhombic space groups with the organic units in mirror planes leading t
o strict crystallographic planarity. In the structure of DEDMDOP-TCNQ
the two molecules alternate along the stacking axis with an interplana
r distance of 1/2 a (3.37 angstrom). The salts of TMDOP have segregate
d donor stacks separated by anion sheets. The interplanar distance is
1/2 a (3.40 and 3.39 angstrom).
