Out of observations of how work in the Parisian Press has changed and
an analysis, based on regulation theory, of negotiated agreements abou
t manpower, questions arise about the nature of the new wage-earning r
elationship established through contractual compromises. What is happe
ning to the labor market and craft-unionism as the press is being mode
rnized? The new contractual compromise accepts the computerization of
production, with its impact on efficiency; but it also maintains most
craft-union safeguards, and it contains social measures that compensat
e for job losses.
