This review considers the application of high-performance liquid chrom
atography (HPLC) to the isolation and analysis of natural auxins. Adv
antages of HPLC over gas and gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) of phytoh
ormones are demonstrated The two most popular versions of HPLC, ion-ex
change and reversed-phase chromatography, and their application to sam
ple purification and analysis (quantitative and qualitative) are descr
ibed. Practical recommendations for the use of reversed-phase and ion-
pair HPLC are given for identification of auxins, and data are present
ed concerning optimal chromatographic systems.
