We report characterisation of a novel repeat sequence from a Mycobacte
rium bovis genomic library. The highly repeated sequence belongs to a
family consisting of a 24 base pair (bp) direct repeat (DR), that appe
ars to be organized into clusters on the chromosome. We classify the 2
4-bp DR into the group of prokaryotic DNA repeats known as the intersp
ersed repetitive sequence elements. The 24-bp DR will be of potential
use as a DNA fingerprinting tool in epidemiological studies of M. bovi
s.
