Eleven phthalocyanine derivatives substituted asymmetrically with a to
tal of eight alkyl and hydroxyalkyl substituents at the non-peripheral
sites, or with six non-peripheral alkyl chains and a dioxolane group
at the peripheral positions, have been prepared by unambiguous synthes
es. All exhibit thermotropic liquid-crystalline behaviour which has be
en characterised using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and pol
arised optical microscopy.
