N. Gisin et al., EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATIONS OF THE STATISTICAL PROPERTIES OF POLARIZATION MODE DISPERSION IN SINGLE-MODE FIBERS, IEEE photonics technology letters, 5(7), 1993, pp. 819-821
Polarization mode dispersion of installed optical cables and of short
concatenations of hi-bi fibers have been measured with polarimetric an
d interferometric instruments. The results confirm the theoretical mod
els, in particular the predicted relations between the two measurement
s methods. The importance of a statistical treatment of polarization m
ode dispersion is emphasized by the observed unstability of the princi
pal states and the remarkable long term stability of their statistics
and means.
