Ka. Seifert et al., THE PHYLOGENETIC-RELATIONSHIPS OF 2 TRICHOTHECENE-PRODUCING HYPHOMYCETES, SPICELLUM-ROSEUM AND TRICHOTHECIUM-ROSEUM, Mycologia, 89(2), 1997, pp. 250-257
The phylogenetic relationship between the hyphomycetes Spicellum roseu
m and Trichothecium roseum was inferred from an analysis of partial se
quences of nuclear small (18S) and nuclear large (28S) ribosomal RNA s
ubunits. Both analyses suggest that the two species form a monophyleti
c group allied with the Hypocreales but sister group relationships are
unclear. Colony characters and trichothecene production also support
the close relationship between these two species. However, differences
in conidiophore branching and conidium ontogeny suggest the retention
of separate anamorph genera is justified.
