E. Spathschwalbe et al., SUCCESSFUL TREATMENT WITH ESTROGEN-PROGES TERONE OF RECURRENT GASTROINTESTINAL BLEEDINGS SECONDARY TO INTESTINAL ANGIODYSPLASIA, Zeitschrift fur Gastroenterologie, 31(7-8), 1993, pp. 447-449
A 75-year-old man with angiodysplasia of the sigmoid and rectum and re
current lower gastrointestinal bleeding episodes, despite repeated end
oscopic laser-coagulation, was successfully treated with oestrogen-pro
gesterone. Besides angiodysplasia he had aortic valvular stenosis, mon
oclonal gammopathy, mild renal insufficiency, and moderate peripheral
arteriosclerosis obliterans. Oestrogen-progesterone may be a valuable
alternative therapy in elderly patients with repeated bleeding, despit
e endoscopic coagulation, secondary to gastrointestinal angiodysplasia
which cannot be treated surgically, in patients who deny surgery, or
with rebleeding after surgery.
