4 DECADES OF ANIMAL HYGIENE IN HUNGARY

Participants in the teaching of animal hygiene, related research and p ractical performance of veterinary prevention have tried to fill alway s the requirements of the given epoque and to serve with their activit ies the development of the production of food of animal origin, protec tion of our environment, as well as the better collaboration of veteri narians and animal breeders also in the future. The present study has demonstrated and confirmed by data that the coworkers of the separate animal hygienic chair (department) established in 1962 in the Budapest Vet School have always detected the demands and they have participate d in the development of the preventive veterinary activities both in t he field of research and teaching. As a result of the intensive resear ch activities, elements of animal hygienic teaching matter has became wealthier and more detailed in the basic veterinary training. As a res ult of the developments, today the animal hygiene is based on three pi llars: on the environmental physiology, applied veterinary etology and herd-health care of farm animals (cattle, swine and poultry). Besides a brief summary of the research results having also an international priority, international collaboration, profession-political activities and acknowledgent of the department for animal hygiene have also been demonstrated.
