Abstract
The historical background of research on the bees or Apoidea of India is reviewed. Current knowledge of these important pollinating insects is compared with that in other parts of the world. Recommendations for further research in India are made, with suggestions regarding the co nservation of bee species and the management of their populations to b enefit both agriculture and wildlife in India.
