The performance of a resistive plate chamber operated with pure Freon
13B1, CF3Br, has been experimentally studied using cosmic rays. The ex
tremely small charge of the signals observed in this operating conditi
on, about 0.2 pC/pulse, improves by orders of magnitude the rate capab
ility of this detector. In addition Freon is a non-flammable gas which
allows a completely safe RPC operation.
