A ring imaging Cherenkov detector, combining a sodium fluoride radiato
r with a CsI photoconverter evaporated on the pad cathode of a wire ch
amber, has been built and tested in a particle beam. Systematic measur
ements of the number of photoelectrons per Cherenkov ring indicate tha
t the quantum efficiency is 60-70% of the one measured in the same det
ector filled with TMAE. The preliminary results demonstrate the techno
logical feasibility of large area fast RICH detectors.
